Death Toll From Powerful Philippines Earthquake Rises to Thirty-Seven
The quake struck off the coast of Sarangani province at 7:37 a.m. local time on Monday, causing extensive destruction throughout parts of Mindanao. Buildings were damaged or collapsed, essential services such as electricity and water were disrupted, and multiple landslides were reported.
Officials said the majority of fatalities were recorded in the Soccsksargen region. Sarangani province accounted for 18 deaths, while 12 were reported in General Santos City and three in South Cotabato. Another four deaths were confirmed in the neighboring Davao Region.
Most victims lost their lives after being struck by falling debris when structures gave way during the earthquake.
Authorities have also reported at least 479 injuries, including 456 in Region 12 and 23 in the Davao Region.
The disaster has affected approximately 88,000 people across southern Mindanao, with more than 22,000 residents displaced from their homes. Many remain in temporary outdoor shelters due to persistent aftershocks and fears that damaged buildings may not be safe to re-enter.
Emergency teams continue search, rescue, and recovery efforts, particularly in General Santos City and Sarangani, which suffered some of the most severe impacts.
Infrastructure damage has been significant, with nine bridges and 19 roads reported damaged. Preliminary estimates place infrastructure losses at more than 900 million pesos (about $14.6 million).
Nearly 1,900 homes were affected by the earthquake, including around 1,500 that were completely destroyed. Property damage has been estimated at roughly 15 million pesos (about $243,600), although assessments are ongoing and the figures may be revised.
Officials from the Office of Civil Defense said plans are underway to establish a tent city to accommodate residents who are unable to return to their homes because of structural damage and continuing safety concerns.
