Philippines Pushes Stronger ASEAN Energy Cooperation Amid Hormuz Crisis
The Philippines is hosting the ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting and related sessions in Manila from Oct. 5-9. Senior energy officials are holding preparatory discussions on Monday and Tuesday, while energy ministers from ASEAN and partner countries are scheduled to meet on Oct. 7-8.
“Energy security is a shared challenge,” Philippine Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said, warning that disruptions in international energy markets could affect fuel supplies, businesses and households.
Manila plans to promote stronger preparations for petroleum supply disruptions, expanded regional electricity connections, more diversified energy sources and improved energy efficiency.
The discussions are taking place as the Philippines holds the rotating ASEAN chairmanship and prepares to host the bloc’s annual leaders’ summit in Manila later this month.
The ASEAN Summit and related meetings are scheduled for Oct. 27-29, bringing together leaders from the bloc’s 11 members and its dialogue partners.
